This release introduces 2D painting for Asset Texturing, one of the largest additions to InstaMAT’s painting engine to date, alongside major performance improvements to baking and autosaving, and new procedural node capabilities.

Precision Where It Matters: 2D Painting Arrives in InstaMAT

Painting in 3D is intuitive, and this release makes it precise too. Artists working on text placement, hard-surface panel lines, or anything that needs to line up exactly on the UV grid now have that precision without leaving InstaMAT. InstaMAT Studio now supports painting directly on a mesh’s UVs in a dedicated 2D view, opened alongside the 3D viewport with a single click from the main Asset Texturing toolbar.

Critically, this isn’t a stripped-down mode bolted onto the side of InstaMAT’s toolset. 2D painting runs on the same procedural, GPU-accelerated layering and painting engine that powers InstaMAT’s 3D workflows, so nothing is lost moving between views. Painting and texturing work is preserved automatically when the source asset changes, and the same texturing work can be applied across multiple assets within a single InstaMAT project. What’s new is the ability to paint and manipulate UV projections directly, which unlocks workflows that are difficult to pull off in 3D alone: placing procedural masks in the 2D view so textures warp correctly once viewed on the model, like aligning text perfectly around a tire rim, or texturing clothing that deforms correctly through UV projection.\image1

Built for UDIM Scale, Fast at Every Tile

High-resolution production work rarely stops at a single UV tile. 2D painting ships with full UDIM support, letting artists view an entire UDIM layout with every tile displayed side by side and paint across all of them seamlessly, a workflow that matters most in visual effects, animation, games, and virtual production, where complex assets demand a high level of texture detail. Working directly across UDIM tiles keeps textures organized, preserves resolution where it matters most, and removes the need to constantly switch views or manage tiles by hand.

Scale doesn’t have to come at the cost of responsiveness. UDIM tiles can be disabled from the side panel so InstaMAT only processes the active tiles, freeing up system resources instead of running the full texturing stack across every UDIM at once, and a specific execution resolution can be set per tile so artists can prioritize detail exactly where it counts. These workflows are backed by major performance gains under the hood in this release: rebaking is now significantly faster, especially on UDIM-based and large multi-material projects, and autosaving is markedly quicker on large projects, keeping InstaMAT responsive during long texturing sessions.

One Toolset, Every View

Moving into the 2D view doesn’t mean giving anything up. Symmetry painting, lazy stroke, curves, and paint projection all carry over exactly as they work in 3D, so artists aren’t relearning their process just because the view changed. InstaMAT’s powerful procedural mask library adapts to the 2D workflow as well, including masking by UV shell, mesh normals, and UV projection transform, giving artists the same depth of procedural control, whether they’re working on the model directly in 3D or with UVs in 2D.

That control gets more precise with this release. Artists can now solo the active material section or UDIM tile with a single click in the viewport toolbar, filtering out everything else so painting only affects the part currently in focus, useful for reaching small or partially covered areas without disturbing the rest of the asset.

Finer Control Over Lighting and Scatter

This release also expands InstaMAT’s node-based toolset. The Mesh Bake Light node now supports baking lighting directly from an environment map (IBL), giving stylized assets a soft, believable lighting pass that adds depth to the final output. Artists can pre-generate Radiance and Irradiance maps with the HDRI Convolute node for faster performance, or set the Mesh Bake Light node’s Environment Mode to Input Map and let InstaMAT handle it automatically behind the scenes. Separately, the Tile Scatter and Guided Scatter nodes gain a new Distribution Mode, Tile Number, giving artists more predictable, controlled scatter results based on the order of supplied image inputs.

InstaMAT, Built Around How Artists Actually Work

2D painting is the largest addition to InstaMAT’s painting toolset since its release, but the thinking behind it isn’t new: artists shouldn’t have to choose between the right view for the job and the tools they already rely on. That principle runs through this entire update, from the performance work that keeps massive UDIM projects responsive, to the node-level additions that give technical artists finer control over lighting and scattering, to the toolset artists already know showing up unchanged in a completely new context.
