Radial symmetry in InstaMAT Studio unlocks fast, precise creation of repeating patterns and radial designs. Artists can paint intricate motifs, ornamental details, and symmetrical elements in seconds, maintaining full creative control while eliminating tedious manual repetition in texturing workflows.
InstaMAT Studio’s radial symmetry feature lets you paint repeating patterns and designs around a central axis with precision and speed. The new painting toolbar provides quick access to symmetry controls alongside your brush settings, so you can enable radial symmetry without interrupting your workflow.
To get started, create a new layer and paint with a multi-channel brush as usual. Then open the symmetry menu and select radial symmetry. As you hover over the surface, InstaMAT previews multiple brush instances arranged around a central axis, showing exactly how each stroke will repeat. You can also change the symmetry axis on the fly, for example switching to the Y axis to easily add bolts around the supports of a barrel.
Positioning is flexible. Use the plane origin controls to move the symmetry center, or press W to bring up the translate gizmo and place the axis directly on the area you want to target. From there, adjust the radial brush count to control how many repeated strokes you paint at once, and use the angle span to create partial arcs and sweeping motifs.
Radial symmetry uses raycasting to project strokes onto the mesh, which helps it work even when models are not perfectly symmetrical. If strokes miss or you see artifacts, fine-tune the ray bias and maximum ray length settings to adapt to your mesh.
In practice, this makes it fast to stamp repeating details like bolt patterns with paint masks, or create intricate bands on assets like vases using straight-line strokes by holding the Shift key and clicking.
